Telnet Example
Let's now illustrate how telnet works. We are going to use telnet
to find some on-line travel agencies by connecting to a database at Rutgers
University.
Travel Reservations by Telnet
Open the NCSA TELNET program and perform the
following sequence of operations.
- Telnet to info.rutgers.edu
and follow the instructions on the screen (it
may ask you to hit a return to continue)
- In the resulting list that is displayed, select the Library by typing in
the number beside it in the list and a return or enter.
- From the resulting displayed list, select "Reference Internet Resources"
by typing in the number and a return or enter.
- From the new displayed list, select "Calendars and Time" by typing in the
number and a return or enter.
- From the new displayed list, select "Airline Schedules/Reservation
Systems" by typing
in the corresponding number and a return or enter.
- The resulting page begins like the following, and now has information
about on-line travel agencies.
Telnet from the Web Browser
You can also use your Web Browser to implement
a telnet connection for sites that allow anonymous telnet access.
For example, in the previous example, try entering the following URL
address into the browser:
If you Browser is configured to launch a telnet helper application,
this should automatically bring up a telnet window, and you can then proceed as
above.
