Igniting a Passion for Technology

in Akron

In Akron, the city known for invention, TECH CORPS is igniting a passion for technology among its young residents with an array of empowering programs. “Our Techie Workshops introduce elementary and middle school students to the world of computer science through hands-on learning activities designed to unleash students’ imaginations,” explained TECH CORPS Northeast Ohio Regional Manager Michelle Moore.

In partnership with Akron Public Schools (APS), TECH CORPS is delivering eleven Techie Workshops directly to Akron elementary and middle school students. The workshops are held on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm from March through May at various APS locations across the city. Afterschool Unplugged:

May Professional Development Opportunity

Are you an out-of-school time educator in Ohio looking for resources to engage your 3rd-8th grade students in computer science?

Join us on Thursday, May 9th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for a FREE session and leave with activities and resources for your out-of-school time program!

During the TECH CORPS Unplugged sessions you’ll gain valuable strategies and resources for implementing “unplugged” technology activities with students. No devices are required, allowing you to explore key concepts and activities creatively.

Selected participants will:

• leave with lessons for implementing computer science in your program
• obtain Ohio Approved credit (pending approval)
• receive a $100 stipend for completing the lessons with students during summer programs and returning student surveys
• have opportunities to participate in a CS-focused Community of Practice

Who should apply:

• Ohio out-of-school time educators who work directly with students in Grades 3-8

Deadline to apply-Friday, April 19, 2024

• Notifications of selection will be sent in late April
• Confirmation details will be sent two weeks prior to the session

Securing essential funds to facilitate the training and deployment of these volunteers.

Join us to make a lasting impact on K-12 students through enriching technology learning experiences while meeting our goal of $50,000 in 2024 towards the Volunteer Build. We depend on the support of dedicated volunteers to educate, excite, and empower students. As we broaden our program offerings and extend our reach, the demand for volunteers and the resources to recruit, train, and deploy them grows. Let’s build a future where technology education is accessible to all!

TECH CORPS welcomes Jamie Timm to its National Executive Board of Directors. As the Chief Delivery Officer for WillowTree, a TELUS International Company, Jamie believes the technology industry never sits still. Today’s students are digital natives, and the prevalence of technology will shape their lives in significant ways. Jamie hopes to be a resource and guide for TECH CORPS as it continues to reach new communities to educate, excite, and empower students with technology.
